View Full Version : Power Compacts with legs

Hi,

Anybody have any experience with those fixtures like Current USA Orbit,
Satellite, or the Formosa units that stand on legs on top of your tank?

My concern is about how much light spills into the room out the sides
between the light and the tank. Do you get this obnoxious bright
flourescent light in the corner of your eye, throwing light around the
room? Or is it sufficiently shielded and focused into the tank?

I'm considering one since a MH solution would involve a custom canopy on
my bowfront, hassles with the center brace shadow, numerous other issues
to the tune of $1000+. Whereas one of these would be hassle free for
$200ish.

Its for my 46g bowfront (upgrading FOWLR to reef). 96x2 (192watts,
smartlite) I'm thinking should be sufficient for most corals I want,
depending on where I place them.

Anybody?
Thanks.
Phil

You have your canopy with a skirt that surround your tank top-edge. This
way, there no rogue ray from the lamp.

Ah, but that's just it. I have no canopy. Just a glass versatop. If I incur
the cost and hassles of a custom bowfront canopy, I'll just go ahead with the
MH lights. So I'm trying to get an idea of how these are "as is" sitting on
top of the tank.

Oh, but I dont have a canopy. Thats my whole point. To construct a custom
canopy, I would just go ahead and get the MH lights. So I'm trying to
determine if these "stand on legs" units are practical "as is".

Anybody?

Well... then my guess is you will have a project ahead of you. Unless you
can buy from some place.
Check out how Marc does his and incorporate that idea to your tank.

I have an Oceanic 92 gal bow front corner that came with a cap that
pretty much is a just a plastic top so to speak , not heaqvy enough to
mount anything in. Anyways because I could not mount anything in the
hood I ended up getting a jalli light with 2x150 HQI and 1x96w Actinic
that has the legs so it sits on top of the glass. If I remove the cap
while the lights are on it is very bright in the room and you do get
that bright light in the corner of your eye.
I realize this is more light than you were thinking about getting, but
i would think it would still be a distraction.

thank you.

I couldnt find a picture of the jalli light on the web, I'd like to
compare it to what I've looked at. Wish I could just have a look in
person. I'm most interested in the Current USA Orbit fixture which is
specifically designed to NOT use in a canopy. I would think this issue
would be addressed when they designed it.

If I could just see one set up somewhere, I could decide in 2 seconds :-)

Thanks again for your input.

Bee,
Better keep those history you reply to. Otherwise, I tend not to remember
what you replying to.
Builting your own canopy with skirt will cover any rogue ray. You can add
mirror / reflector etc..
