View Full Version : Question on Refugium with grape caulerpa algae

Hi-
I've got a 10gal refugium for my 75g tank. The refugium contains sand, live
rock, and grape caulerpa algae. There is a light on it 24/7.
My question is: does anyone ever prune this stuff? Mine has pretty much
filled the tank and has formed a solid top. Yesterday, I cut away a few
sections in order to move it away from the overflow and allow some
additional light to get to the bottom of the tank.
TIA

You can prune them.
If you have a chamber or area where you keep those convict [crab / shrimp
etc], you can use the prumed algae to feed them.

Tom,
You need to prune the caulerpa and remove it from your system. That is
one of the things and makes the system work to remove nutrients. Also
if you do not keep it pruned it could help to cause it to go sexual on you.

Is it possible to get branches to attach to other rock and grow? I would
like to have more smaller bunches rather than a few large ones.

just put the rocks next to or on top of existing bunches. it will spread,
and you can simply move the rocks elsewhere. every tiny piece can, and will,
become a new plant.

GG,
Continuing Tom's post, if you fill a small (foodsafe) container with
coralsand or coralgravel, and push one of the adventitious shoots into
it, holdfasts will develop into the sand/gravel. After a weekor so,
sever the shoot from the main plant and the container can be
transferred to another tank/place.

Within minutes it turns white and all dies at once for no apparent reason
releasing nasty stuff into the tank
