how quickly to add top-off water?

Hello;

Newbie question. I have a 55gal tank. At what rate can I add RO/DI
topoff water without stressing the fish by dropping the S.G. too
quickly?

you can purchase solenoid and wire up a unit of your own or else check
around for pre-built unit. if you have a container of RO water then have it
plumbed via a small valve or pump into the main tank. when the water drops
below the correct level the solenoid allows flow into your tank/sump and
will lessen the stress on the system.

Unless you let the water level drop drastically before topping it off, it's
not going to matter, because you won't be adding that much at one time.

not sure ? but I just pour it in the sump slowy to bring level back to a
mark I have on side of sump which is the max water I can have if i turn off
all the power.
that dont read quite right ! the mark is made when power is on and running
but if it was higher the sump would overflow when the the power is turned
off.

I think another question might be, do you have to add top-off water
quickly at all?

I use an electronic float valve and a slow dosing pump to add top-off water.

For the float switch I use, see:

For a dosing pump similar to the one I'm using, go to
DrsFosterSmith.com->Fish->search for "dosing pump" (their URL is too
long to display here)

I also mounted the float switch on my aquarium using only parts
available at Radio Shack. The parts I used are: super-strong double
sided foam tape, small black metal right angle brackets, and some
plastic cable ties. See this URL:

This setup has been working nicely for over a year. Note that if you
put the float switch in the main tank, you have to keep it away from
snails who might try and congregate on it, and flood your tank.
