Hiya!
I have a question that my brain sorta farted on. I just moved my 45
gallon reef to my new apartment and it has been up for a day. I was
wondering what is 'worse' the nitrite or nitrate. I know they are both
'bad' and I know that nitrate is related more to bad algae growth....

Thanks!!

Nitrite is toxic to most life, nitrate is not toxic.

I'm a newbie around here, but nitrates are potent vasodilators (matter
of fact they are used to manage coronary artery diesease,) so at
adequate doses, they are toxic to most life forms.

To be exact, Rich - everything is toxic in "adequate" doses...
Including pure water to us, humans... hope you can imagine this.

What Kim wanted to say, I guess, is that nitrates are LESS toxic
than nitrites. For example, I would expect everything would be
dead in minutes if you had 40-60mg/l nitrites in your tank water,
but with 60mg/l of nitrates, animals would not feel comfortable
but they would survive for a long time... personally tested ;-)

I would also add, nitrites in sal****er environment are less toxic than
same levels of nitrites in freshwater due to other ions in the water
but still more toxic than nitrates.

To quote original: Nitrite is toxic to most life, nitrate is not toxic.

Notice Not, not Less.

Everything in existence can be "toxic."

Even oxygen, that element that we and other life forms need to carry out
our life; can be very toxic.

Anyway, don't want to engage in a ****ing contest, so for the sake of
clarity; I have understood the basic concept : )

Regards,

Rich
