View Full Version : Overflow Really noisy

Under the guidance of my LFS, I have drilled my acylic tank towards
the bottom. I then installed a 1-1/2" bulkhead, insrted a 90 degree
elbow into the bulkhead and into the elbow is a piece of pvc to the
level I want my water level. It is 1-1/2" pvc. It is really loud. I
can hear it through the wall. What can I do to quiet it down? Here
is an example of what it looks like.

I had a similar issue as well. I used the PVC pipe in the overflow
compartment but drilled lots of holes in the upright portion of the tube. I
also placed 4 smaller holes at the bottom of the drain tube so that all the
overflow water can drain out when the power isn't on. I also placed a cap
over the tube to help dampen the noise. The holes I drilled ( I think I put
about 25 in each 1 1/2 tube) also extend above the water line. In the even
of my water top off valve not working, I would have about a 2 day leway to
fix it before I have any spillages from overfilling the tank. If you find
that the water level is still higher than you would like after you have
drilled several holes, drill a few more holes progressing down the tube.
This will let water spill into the tube sooner and eventually lower your
water level.

I don't need to lower the water level, I don't have an overflow box.
If I drill holes lower, the water level in my tank will drop. I also
worry about overflowing the sump with holes drilled low in the pipe.
It will drain until the level of the last hole. Would a durso work in
this kind of setup? I guess it would look like this? It would lower
the water level quite a bit though. How about inserting some vinyl
tubing down the pipe and out the sump? Would that eliminate the
suction? Any more suggestions?

I have an overflow box and I used foam from a filter over the 1 1/2" drain.
Made it much quieter.
