well I am not sure if you lot will think this is of any use but.
I was chatting with a guy about milling large holes and needing large
cutters. He suggested that if I got a rotating table and a 6mil cutter I
could cut any size hole. so to cut a perfect round circle all I need to do
is hold the router and spin the work around under it then it will cut a
perfect circle.
I was thinking about DIY skimmers

core drills. a fly cutter is used for metal or wood large holes. that won't
work well for glass.

no. a router won't work for glass. it may for acrylic, but it's a lot easier
to get a hole saw than to get a precisely turning table and be able to mount
and secure a glass tank such that the center of the hole is exactly over the
center of rotation.
iow, no it won't work.

no it wont work for glass I would use a glass cutter. But it would work for
Acrylic. not seen many glass skimmers.
I was thinking of two bits of ply with nut and bolt in the centre some
double sided tape but then I am into DIY and like to have fun
my tank is 6 foot long how do you think I could spin it around :-) come on
be serous smile a bit please.

A decent sized glass shop will have a water cutter, this will cut your
circles for you.
There is no way to do it out of glass by scoring and breaking AFAIK.
There is no reason a skimmer needs to be round, it's just looks neater
and more professional as it is the industry standard.
Just do it out of square stuff if you need too.

.... or it does not necessarily have to be a glass shop. To find
hundreds of places with abrasive waterjet cutters, visit:

Note: Ask to make sure they have experience with cutting brittle
materials first. For glass cutting, the machines must be capable of
low-pressure piercing.
