I have a yellow-eyed tang that two mornings ago showed a few white
spots on its body, which I immediately assumed was ich. Upon
returning home from work, I noticed the spots had disappeared. Last
night, not long after doing a water change and some tank cleaning, I
noted the spots again, but this time there were several more,
sprinkled on the fins, and across the sides of its body.

But, again, this morning the spots have disappeared. Am i observing
the behavious of the ich parasite, or is this something completely
different?
Thanks.

No, you have a very uncommon form of ick that cycles in 24 hrs. You best bet is to wait
2-3 hours after you see no ick and then remove the fish, a short dip in FW at the same
temp. for just a rinse, 2-3 seconds and then put them in quarantine tank. And watch to see
if any ick have transferred in the next 24-48 hrs. If none you should be safe. If they
reappear do the same a second time. If that fails then you will have to treat them.
Usually just the one move does it. Leave the main tank with no fish of 4-5 weeks and then
put them back. Don't let this go any longer or the ick will get out of cycle and you will
be in big trouble, especially with tangs.

Thanks for your help, Boomer. Treatment has begun. More than 24
hours have since passed, and I don't see a visible return of the ich.
