TOP FIN FILTERS

Good evening,

In the last 2 months, I've unplugged and plugged back in 2 Top Fin
Filters, both less than 9 months old, only to find that they no longer
work. Not even an electric "hum". One was for a 29 gallon tank, and
one was for a 10 gallon tank.
I replaced the 29 gallon filter with a Penguin model. The 10 died
today.
Is Top Fin "Top Junk", or am I just unlucky? Good thing I keep an
aeriator in the closet.

Just a quick thought, when is the last time you took apart the impellor
assembly and cleaned everything out thoroughly?

Only asking if my aqua-tech 20-40 craps out every now and then, stops right
dead. After I strip it down, thoroughly scrubbing down the impellor, and
brushing out the hole where the magnetic drive is (don't recall the name),
it always fires back up.

It also siezes if I take it out of service for a period of time, requires
washing the assembly removing any crud, and away it goes again.

You've got me there, no, I havn't cleaned the thing. I thought I read
somewhere that all the good gook inside was beneficial bacteria. If it
got too bad, though, I would usually rince some of the stuff off when
changing the filter. But in my experience, when something electrical
is not broken but has the rotor mechanisms siezed, I hear a "buzz". I
might be wrong in this case, so I will try and revive it. But another
thing I didn't like about the Top Fin 29 gallon pump/filter was that
it would not start pumping on it's own without being primed. This
could be disasterous over a weekend if I'm gone and the power goes off
for a few minutes and comes back on. This is known to happen where I
live. The 10 would fire back up and start pumping on it's own. The new
Penguin pump will continue on it's own also if power is lost and
restored.

Thanks for the advice. Being somewhat new to the hobby, I have much to learn.
And the 10 did come back to life after degunking.
