Yup, my 4 do it all the time, especially during feeding.

Yes its perfectly normal. It is caused by the powerful sucking mouth of the
bala shark. It sucks water in through the mouth and pumps it out through the
gill openings. On the way the food is filtered out of the water with the
fine musculature and bones in the mouth. In nature the bala shark, like many
others of the carp family, eat small planctonic animals. These occur in
swarms and are sucked up, several at a time. The popping sound occurs when
the surface is broken and air is sucked into the mouths of the fish. If you
look closely you can see some of the the air bubbles coming out of their
gill openings.
