View Full Version : Longevity of Baby Brine Shrimp Eggs
Hi. I have a can of opened baby brine shrimp from a couple to few years
back. It had a plastic lid on it while I wasn't using it.
Well, my piranhas have bred on me again and I wanted to start hatching the
baby brine shrimp again. I put in a litre (close to a quart) of freshwater,
about 2 tablespoons of non-iodized salt, about a 1/2 teaspoon of eggs and
aerated it for over 24 hours. After that, nothing. I had two batches
going and not one produced any live bbs.
My question is, do the bbs eggs go bad after a while of being opened (not in
its sealed tin container)? I'm basically doing the same thing I was a few
years back but I at least had success back then. I don't think I'm doing
anything wrong so I'm suspecting it's the eggs.

The eggs of brine shrimp can last for many years in the dessicated state.
Especially the dessicated state of Utah and it's famous salt flats.

Depends on how dry they are kept. How many years is a few? Humid
fishroom? I buy large batches of eggs and store them in SEALED tubes in
the freezer - they keep for years that way.

If you kept them in the fridge, then you should be ok. If not, buy more.
The www.brineshrimpdirect.com site has them. They say to keep them in the
fridge. They do not say freeze them though....so I guess it works, but aI
never tried that. My 3 year can of premium BBS eggs still hatches
premium.....
I left out some I had in a sealed little container for a summer and never
got one egg to hatch the next year....I guess heat screws them up.....
1 - 2 tablespoons of salt per quart of water.....air........85 degrees and
boom after 24 hours.....Do not forget the bright light nearby to trigger
them.
