I gave up. I kicked the bugger. It started...
I believe technicians call that "the technical tap".
I guess it's on the way out if it needs a whallop to start.
Sorry for all the noise and thanks to everyone who made
suggestions in my hour of panic.

Percussive Maintainence!!!
Usually the way to check is to run the impellor dry. Remove the lid
containing the gubbins (technical term!) and switch on. You may need to
twiddle the impellor by hand to se if there is any life. If the impellor is
solid then the electricity is getting to the motor, if it moves reasonably
easily, but ina 'lumpy' manner then there is no power.
HTH for future reference.
I switched to eheim a long time ago!!!
Good luck.

Mine 304 was a biatch to get started, but now I got a technique that works
almost ever time.
Before cleaning, while the unit is still running, shut the valve off to the
inlet and outlet tube. Close it tight so the water doesn't drain out. Next,
unplug the unit and clean as perusual. Before sealing the unit back up, fill
it up to the brim with water. Connect the inlet/outlet lines, but DO NOT
open the valve. When everythings ready, start the unit up, and open the
valve. If it already doesn't start running, 1-2 pumps and away it goes.
Works almost everytime for me, only time it didn't was once on the second
pump, I blew up a couple fish and sent the pingpong ball in the inlet tube
flying threw the tank, stupid thing.
