Hello~
I adopted 3 guppies from a friend about a month ago and they all
seemed happy.
After about month, algae was forming on the walls and the gravel, so I
cleaned the tank, removed about 50% of the water, etc...( I thought
you were only supposed to remove water when cleaning the tank, once a
month)
About 2 days later, one of the guppies died and the other two hang out
at the top. So I came online read and read about good guppy
environments, so I went home and tested my water. ph is about 7.3
ammonia is 0 temp is about 85F (this seems ideal according to the
other posts, temp might be a little high) I've also been doing about
15% water changes weekly.
Then I read that guppies should be kept in groups of 3 minimum, so
since my aquarium is only 3g i went and bought 2 more guppies.
Initially, the two new guppies were really active and in turn got one
of the originally guppies active too...but as the days are
progressing, the activity is dying down again. The new fish still are
more active than my original 2, but their activity is slowing down
too.
So I'm thinking maybe they are sick, since they aren't very active. I
don't see any sores/fungus/ailments of any type on the fishes at all.
They are not gapping for air when they are at the surface. They eat
agressively. And dive down to pick up any scraps of foods that have
settled at the bottom. I've been treating them with melafix since i
read that it was good to do when introducing new fish. Is this just
normal guppy behavior? Hanging around at the surface? I know that they
normally live in the top half of the aquarium, but this isn't the top
half this is like top 5% of the aquarium.
