I've got to rena pumps - they are not totally quiet
I'm beginning to think a lot of nonsence is written about this - i
picked up a secondhand tanks with a four year old air pump by a minor
manafacturer, its no louder than the rena

I agree, I've got one that is huge, the size of a brick and it's quieter
than the smaller 2 renas that I have....

I have a Rena 400 and the pump itself is very quiet in my opinion.
However, what makes the noise on my tanks is the sound of bubbling
water coming up through the undergravel filter tubes.
Whenever I have trouble with noise disturbing my sleep, I use silicone
earplugs bought from the drug store. You may wish to consider this if
you go with the Rena pump and you continue to be bothered by the sound
of bubbling water.

The quietest air pump I ever found was the Optima. I ran one of those for
years without any noise apart from the bubbles.
For the last couple of years I haven't used an air pump at all. Firstly
because I hate the deposits left on the glass covers where the bubbles pop
and secondly because I prefer the surface agitation to be created by the
filter outlet.
Graham.
I have never installed an air pump in my 120g except to make the cover on
the treasure chest go up and down.
When I feel the need to make air bubbles in my tanks I open the valves on my
penguin power pumps.

Can't you just get a power filter that adds some surface agitation and
forget the pump?

The linear piston pump designs are wonderful new technology. Trouble is
they are expensive and are made really for more than just one outlet.
Here is a link to a 15 outlet one they say "Can be next to your
Bed....."

I bought many of the Profile brand diaphragm pumps model 9500 at Petco a
few years ago. 5 out of 6 of them are not noticeable. One is and
always was.
One thought....Put the airpump in a closet or another room and run some
airline. Its not ideal to make long runs as it adds a lot of back
pressure......but who cares.

I just bought a new "Top Fin" 60 for my 55 gallon tank to run my bubble
wall and the thing makes more noise than the little wal-mart brand one
that I used for my 20 gallon tank. Don't know if there is a quiet one.
And I don't want to waste any more money trying to find one either.
