View Full Version : Clown Load or Yo-Yo loach for 15 gallon tank?
Michael

I really love Clown Loaches but I'm worried that they'll grow too big for my
15 gallon tank. I know they can grow up to 12" in the wild but never do in
an aquarium. I also know I need to get at least 3, so this is a factor as
well. So far I don't have any other fish, just two amano shrimps. If 3
clown loaches would work in my small tank I'd be happy with that and
wouldn't add any more fish. If 3 is too much, then I'm thinking about 3
Yo-Yo Loaches. I know their max size is 4". Would they be happy in a 15
gallon tank?

The loaches are likely to eat the shrimp, IME.

15 gallon is really too small for any kind of loach. Why not choose other
small fish that will be happy there?

I've heard "1 inch of fish per gallon" so 15 gallons should easily handle 3
Yo-Yo loaches, at least in theory anyway. I really like loaches because
they're active and fun. A lot of fish are just boring. The only other fish
I really like are neons, but they're not as fun as loaches.

And not a good theory either. Having 15 1" fish is not the same as 3 5" fish.
Think fish size with respect to tank size.

If you really like loaches, I'd suggest you invest in a larger tank where
they will be happy.

Your loaches wouldn't be too active in a 15 gal tank though.
Neons would be great but there's not a lot of action.
Golden Pencilfish are small and come in various colours.
They also do a neat little dance which is pretty comical
to watch.

As per others, none of the loaches would be happy in a 15 gal tank.
They are wonderfull fish. I too would love to own some, but I need a
big tank first. Sometimes I dream of a 180gal (6ftx2ftx2ft) with
atleast a dozen clown loaches.

I have that same dream all the time ;->
I thing Mike should try Zebra loach. Stay small & very entertaining. I could
hand feed the four I have.
Cheers.

Another great little loach, but not always available, is Botia sidthimunki.
They are very gregarious, love to swim mid-water during the day, and will
work over the snails. Half a dozen in a 15 G is not too many.
There is also a 'King' sized version which is an undescribed species with
the same pattern. Not much info on it.

Thank you both for these excellent recommendations. I really love loaches
so I'm happy to know that these two species would be ok for a 15 gallon.
I'll keep an eye out for them in the local fish shops..

Botia sidthimunki gets to be over 4 inches long. Half a dozen of those would
most certainly be too many for a 15 gallon tank.

I have yet to see one that even got close to 3 inches. I have indeed seen
the new one and they were all 4 inches plus.
True, some reference books say 4 inches but they might be talking TL rather
than SL. I'll stick with my opinion that they will stay small enough and be
visible enough to be interesting.

No ideal how B. sidthimunki looks like in real life, never seen them for
sale in Malaysia. Would very much like to get several for my collection.
Baensch's (6th Edition) mentioned L=2.25", I guessed that should about
right. JMO
I have three Nemacheilus Ornatus or Masyae, not too sure which one yet, they
are great to watch, active all the time, steal food from much bigger loach,
and remain in rather small body mass, but body could be lengthen in time.
