View Full Version : snail shells - causing cloudy water?

Hello everyone-

Before I get started I would like to thank everyone who has helped
guide me with my past questions / issues.

Previously I asked for a solution regarding a pond snail population
explosion and was happy with the responses I recieved. I went the way
of getting three YoYo Botias to take care of the snail
population.....and did they ever. The tank is now free of snails (at
least that I can tell). But now I have a separate issue....my tank
water is very cloudy (milky). I did approx 40% water change on Sunday
(July 27) and the water has not improved since then (actually I think
it might be getting worse!)

I have read in other posts that this could be a bacteria bloom.... I
have not done anything differently that would cause this. The tank
has been up and running since January and I have never had this
problem. Is it possible that the snail shells sitting on the bottom
of the aquarium are causing the water to be cloudy??

The specs on the aquarium are:
55 gallon freshwater
pH 7.5
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate 20 ppm

I add no chemicals to the tank except "cycle" and dechlorinator during
water changes.

Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks.

Kevin

It's possible that there are some partially eaten snail bits
stuck in the shells--best to get them out of there just
in case.
