Is it OK to feed trout muscle meat that has been frozen to my Bichir?
I'm concerned about the possibility of him getting parasites from the
trout, but wouldn't freezing kill any parasites? Any diseases to
worry about? The trout was caught by a friend in the Sierras.

Thanks very much for any help.

Feeding food collected in the wild always carries risks. Freezing helps, but
there are some things that simply go dormant when frozen. I myself avoid any
live/frozen food not purchaced from a trusted LFS, and even then only if
really nescesary.

Freezing will eliminate some parasites, but not all.....it does have some
risk. Consider frozen raw shrimp and frozen foods from your LFS such as
krill, silversides, mysid shrimp. Live earthworms and African clawed frogs
also make for great food items. What species of bichir do you have?

Hi.

Thanks very much to all three of you who replied. I think I'll not
risk giving "Sonny" any trout and will stick with the silversides and
beef heart that he has grown up on.

Sonny is a beautiful Ornate Bichir. You can see a picture of him at:
http://www.members.cox.net/orngcat/sonny.jpg He is about 18" long now
and I got him about 3 years ago at about three inches long. He
actually is quite fond of floating Hikari Cichlid Staple food, but I
like to give him some real meat from time to time.

I feed my fishes a staple diet of cooked, frozen cocktail shrimp (the
small ones), had quite cheaply from the frozen fish section at your
local grocery. Their diet gets supplemented during the warmer seasons
by occasional earthworms and insects (crickets, beetles, etc.) found
in the backyard. Also, a pinch of commercial dry food every so often
for vitamins.
