Short summary: I set up a 15 gallon tank 2 weeks ago. For the first week I
ran the filter in my neighbor's tank. After the first week, I put the
filter back in my tank and added two amano shrimp. They did just fine for
the second week, ate lots of algae, swam around, etc. Today, two weeks
after setting up the aquarium and one week after adding the amanos, I
changed about 20% of the water. I also wrung out the filter sponge in a
bucket filled with the water I had just removed from the aquarium. Right
away the shrimps were swimming all around and I thought it was weird because
usually they don't swim very often. Within 2 hours, I noticed one of the
shrimps lying on his back and the other was watching. Then the second one
laid down. I didn't know what to do so I got my neighbor, he took my
shrimps out and put them directly into his tank. I thought maybe I had
introduced some kind of poison or something into my water, via the bucket.
I had just rinsed the bucket out very well and I hadn't used it in two
weeks, and two weeks ago the last thing I did was mix up the potting soil
with some fertilizer. Now they're sitting in my neighbor's tank, still
alive but not moving. One of them is pretty white.

I read that these shrimps can change their shell with water changes, could
this be what's happening? Any other possibilities?

I dunno, but I suspect the bucket could be the culprit. Personally I have a
bucket that I bought exclusively for water changes, and never put anything
but pure water in it.
