Oddly enough in my - limited - experience neons are hardy little
buggers, I've had one set that have gone though a hell of a time when
I started to learn (I bought a secondhand tank that came with a stack
of fish including a mix of 10 neons and cardinals) and made a lot of
cockups in the first few weeks, but only lost one neon and that was
after the tank had settled down.

However, if you are in the US, I have a feeling that the quality of
neons you get might not be the same as the UK, since a trawl of usenet
(via google) seems to indicate more problems over there than here with
new fish dying. To date I've only had two fish die shortly after
putting them into a tank, a krib which lasted only a hour and an otto
that passed on after four days (however, I may have unintentionally
starved the latter, since his four mates put into larger tanks with a
lot of plants lived while he went into a tank with only a couple and
may not have eaten the algae tablets I was feeding him)

In the last few weeks I've bought a batch of six neons all of whom
have survived and added another two yesterday who are currently in my
"introduction tank"
