View Full Version : pleco faeces

Hello, not a delightful subject but anyway...

My pleco has recently started creating long stringy faeces, of
the usual darkish brown colour. Unlike usually where they break
up, these hang around and I can fish them out by hand, which I
am doing (lovely!) - is this a symptom of something wrong, or
in the range of "normal" for a pleco?

I would have taken a photo but that might be going too far.
I've had Algernon the pleco for a couple of years, he's about 5"
and seems happy otherwise.

Going abroad? Please take a photo of a pylon in another country!
www.gorge.org/pylons has 16 countries covered - only 176 to go!

Do you have a peice of driftwood for him to nibble?
Plecos need wood (lignin?) in their diet (probably
for roughage).

BTW if you've had him for a couple of years and he's
only 5", I doubt he's a pleco (Hypostomus sp.). If he were,
he'd be at least 12".

He's got loads, about 4 largish pieces... this is a sudden
change, anyway.

He's definitely a pleco. He grew like mad initally such that
I had to move him out of the 2ft tank, but he hasn't really
grown much in the 4ft. Still, he matches exactly the ones
that are over a foot in the shop. They do grow big but he
competes with a 7-8" clown syno now for food and I think he
maybe just isn't getting as much as before, though his belly
is still plump.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Brown strigy faeces like a polish coil kolbasa eh? well that describes
every damned pl*co I've ever had, and currently have. My pl*co's have
super poo, the python only breaks up the coils and can't lift that heavy s.

Cheers for the reassurance!

maybe it had a minor digestive problem until now, and now that it's cleared up
your pl*co will grow like crazy.

btw, fyi, spell pl*co as Haywire and I have... you may have less trouble with
yours... it's a bizarre and frequently substantiated superstition that spelling it
out properly kills the ones you have.

Er, maybe. I don't know, it grew like mad when it was in a tank
that was too small and now it only grows slowly. Long as he's not
sick (and he looks fine) I don't mind.

>btw, fyi, spell pl*co as Haywire and I have

No thanks, I'm not a superstitious person!

Cheers,

What a bunch of bull. Maybe your PLECO can tell the future and be read by
The Pet Psychic and become a star.

What utter nonsense not worthy of any true aquariast.

lighten up... or, here's a thought, read the FAQs at
http://faq.thekrib.com/intro-turf.html#archive then maybe you can understand
some of the culture.

Just because it's mentioned in the faq doesn't mean it isn't stupid. The
real issue is that "pl*co" is irritating to read, especially when it's used
repeatedly. Don't you find all those asterisks annoying to type as well?

If I was overly sensitive to annoyance, I wouldn't be "doing" usenet,
eh?
