We have a new mystery in our not quite cycled tank,...we have added 9 fish
to a 220 gal. to help get the cycle started...we notice that all along the
bottom and mainly in one corner,..is some stuff that looks like cobwebs. Two
things come to mind...First thought was some sort of egg-sack gone
bad...then as I was typing this..I thought maybe loose filter media that
seperated from the cannister filters...The fish are S. Africa cichlids...Any
ideas??

I would have to guess that it's a bit of white mold growing on uneaten
food. I had this problem with a 20 gallon tank that was cycling (using
black substrate so it was easy to see). I vacuumed the corners where the
fuzzy stuff was worst, and there was indeed nasty old food over there.

So, you might try a couple things. Most obvious is feeding a little
less. Of course, they're New World Cich-pigs, so they'll probably still
make a mess of less food. Perhaps you could rearrange the in/out of your
filter to stir up the water a bit, particularly in the bad corners. A
bottom feeder of some sort comes to mind too.

Or, you could just vacuuum it out, or not worry about it too much.

Just my two cents; hope this helps, and somebody correct me if my
suggestions are off-kilter.
