I'm told that pop-eye can legitimately come from a physical impact. I've
also been told that a single pop-eye is probably physical damage, while 2
pop-eyes would be from inflammation, usually from a bacterial source. I
personally think it's possible to have a single pop-eye from bacteria, so
ymmv. If bacterial, you don't want the ulcer behind the eye to rupture
and enter the water column. If it's from physical damage, I'd leave it
in the main tank and monitor the condition (provided you have no
predators in there). I'm, afraid that I haven't been much help for you.

Not a lot because it died last night! But you have been very useful
for future reference - I've never seen popeye before and now I know
how distinctive it looks.
I spoke to the LFS who simply offered a swap; they gave me another
fish and said "if the first one lives, bring it back if you like!"
This wasn't ideal as I don't want a sick fish with others but I
kept a close eye on it and put it in an isolation net so if it
died it wouldnt get eaten.
Sadly it died last night but the remaining fish seem well.
I did an immediate water change in case anything nasty had been
released into the water so I could at least reduce it.
I also got a few pictures to remind me what popeye looks like
in future since I didnt find many online (although I think some
sites were down due to the US/Canada blackouts).
Thanks for the advice!
I did something dumb in a different tank last night. I forgot I'd
removed the foil that was acting as a shaker on a flake pot and
happily shook the whole thing upside down over a tank.
Much netting and syphoning ensued; oops!

Personally, I've never found pop-eye (or dropsy) to be contagious if the
affected fish is not broken open. I suspect (& hope) you will be fine.

Yes, rolling blackouts now (4 on, 4 off). On top of all the digital
clocks in the house, I have several aquarium timers which don't have
battery backup :o(

Ouch, I bet you get a bacterial bloom in that one soon.
ps: I discovered my pangs love algae wafers.. go figure.

That's great; I do try to make sure sick fish are at least in a
breeding cage so their bodies can't be scavenged, even if I don't
have room for a quarantine tank. (Hmmm. Must take the bf to task ;)

Oh dear :( At least they are handy for something. When we had a
power cut the electricity company tried to claim it started at 0620,
which at 0730 didn't seem too bad for the fish. However all the timers
had stopped bang on 2am...

I've got unhappy fish (I hadn't realised how bad it would be
actually, I feel *even more stupid* now) but am doing my best to
rectify things. I'm finding that when fish problems are due to a
power cut, you can be cross at the power company. When it's due to
trying to feed fish while overtired and not thinking, you can only
be cross at yourself :(
>ps: I discovered my pangs love algae wafers.. go figure.
Heh. Are they small enough to scoop up in one mouthful? Mine seems
to like flat things that sink. It's just that algae wafers always
seem to have a large pleco attached :) So maybe he doesnt get a go!
Cheers,
