Canister experiment, anyone?

Anyone willing to perform an experiment?

Put some tankwater in a bucket. Put the inlet hose for the canister fitler
(Fluval, Eheim, Filstar) into the bucket on the ground. Check out what the
output is like at tank level and report back.

I'm really interested in building a sump and am interested in using a
canister filter as a return pump. Thanks to anyone who wants to try!

Hi,

Using an older Fluval 304 I had spare I did the experiment.

1. The filter will not pump when the bucket was at ground level, the
opening of the inlet hose had to be higher than the pump.

2. When the bucket was just higher than the pump the filter did pump up to
sink level, but at a reduced flow (though much better than I expected) Pump
was considerably noisier than normal

3. With the bucket on the sitting on the sink pump flow was normal.

Hope this helps, I still think there must be a better purpose built pump to
use for a water return in the system you have designed. The Eheim may work
better, Who knows?

Thanks a lot. I'm actually going to have the sump on a table at about the
same height as the main tank (albeit behind a wall), and I plan on using a
pump.. this was more to settle an argument I'm having with someone.. though
I still may end up using a canister filter... obviously shouldn't be a
problem in the setup I'm thinking of.
