I've read about them, never used them.

do I just get yarn from the fabric store? I wonder if there are
chemicals used in the yarn preparation that would be harmful to the
fish.

==================
I used green and brown knitting yarn from Wally*World one year when I didn't
have enough hornwart to go around. Rinse it well before using. It didn't
harm anything. I wrapped it around cheap dowels from Home Depot.

Yes. use 100% acrylic, dark green or dark brown, boil after
they're made to leech the dye out. When the water doen't go
a nast color after you changhed it a few times after boiling
it the it's safe.

Any color will work but white and light blue ones I've
seen look awful.
