What, in your collective wisdom, would be the ideal collection of fish to
control all the various types of algae found in a community tank? In
particular, what would you folks recommend I buy for my 75 US gal tank which
is to be heavily planted, and will not have any fish that gets larger than
4" ?

If the tank is really heavily planted, once the plants are growing you
shouldn't have too much of an algae problem as the higher plants will
outcompete the algae for nutrients. However, a small army of otocinclus
should take care of any that does pop up, and they will not hurt your
plants. Plus, they look cool when there's a lot of them.
