I have a 4 ft troptical setup with internal canister filter and have no
problem.

A friends son, want to get a small 1ft etc coldwater setup for there
bedroom.

I suspect that the best setup would be plastic plants and UGF? Is this the
best way forward (easiest maintence) or should i consider something else?

UGF is a pain. Get a small power filter.

I agree. A very small hang-on filter will run you less than 20 bucks. Fair
warning, a tank that small is easy to overload.

when you say 1 ft., what are the other dimensions? surface area? volume?

i have a 10G coldwater setup. corner filter (started with a 799 Elite but now
use an 803 for the multiple lines i have to the two tanks). well, the lower
water level puts it at about 4-5G.

2 newts, three white cloud mountain minnows, two yo-yo loaches (we won't talk
about the dwarf puffer fish: both have... moved on)
and two plants... and rocks. average run-of-the-mill substrate (basic aquarium
gravel).

so, probably a couple of wccminnows and an 0tto or two. you want a broader
tank for the newts since the water level is considerably lower. (ex. my 10G is
filled only halfway, then there's the 2" substrate, then the rocks for the
newts to climb and loaches to hide amongst... i probably have only 4G actual
water column :)

be SURE to put a screen or cover on it. fish like jumping sometimes.

AcH.
