I have a heater that is almost 20 years old. I have also had heaters go nutz
after a few months. They're electric/electronic man-made devices, and are
just as likely to wear out as any other device. YMMV, as usual. The
thermostat on most heaters are not very accurate, so it's good that you're
using a thermometer to monitor it. If the temp won't go as low as you'd
like, the heater may need to be retired, yes.

I bought two with my first 120G, one is still going strong and doing all the
heating for the whole tank and the other stuck on after three months and
tried to boil my tank. I tried it again several months later and it is
still stuck on.

JOhn :-)
