Call me strange, but I was just wondering why everyone uses pl*co
instead of pleco...

Old superstition. Story goes, if you type the whole word, without munging
it, your pleco will die. For some reason, mine continue to live, and eat me
out of house and home while they're about it.

The real question is, how did it get started? It certainly can't pre-date
the .aquaria groups. Anybody out there been hanging around here long enough
to have seen, or facilitated, its early usage? I could google "pl*co" but
I'd get about 90 billion hits so there's not much point.

PS In any case, my plecos live on despite my reckless usage of their name.
