You have have fish fun with little or no money!!!
Here is what I did, so you can do it too.
The big cost of having fish in home is: electricity used by Heater,
Light
Other big cost of fish: Fish Flakes
Hidden cost of fish: Plants
1 Plants are more expensive than fish (zebra, platy, molly...)
Get the plants from local ponds in summer. Remember to take the root
too, otherwise it will die within days
2 Flakes are very expensive, all you need is to cut some chicken
(cheapest meat) and use dry bread (cheapest grain) to feed your fish.
Don't trust those ads on you need professional flakes. Fish can eat
anything, if you feed them right
3 Light, Air, Heat.
Heat: In winter, put your tank near the heater of your house, if your
house temp is 70-75, then the temp near the heater is enough for heat
your tank.
Light: Put it in direct sun in winter/fall/spring. Never in summer. In
summer you will have algea problems. My algea is gone after this
summer is over
Air: I bought a hand pump for bike/airbed, I use it to pump aid
myself. It saves electriciy, and help me cut fat. Very good
4 I got fish free too. If you have friends, ask for free fish, because
fish breed too much too often. My free fish came from petco, after
then gave me $2 coupon. I also got free fish when I go to rivers to
get miniows and stripper bass. I have 4 stripper bass now, in a betta
tower. Change 100% water every week. They don't need heater or food.
Lives forever. I caught them in sea. But they live well in tapwater. I
can post photos of them if requested..

The fish food I usually buy is about $1.00 to $2.00 per ounce.
Chicken is somewhat cheaper in the stores near here.

The cheapest fish I have are bettas, each in a 2.25g plastic tank.
They are warmed by my overhead desk lamp which I already had. In
fact they diffuse the light nicely. Total cost to set up, £10.
But the best tank I have - also cheap as it, the filter, light etc
was a gift - is a 4ft. The fish inside cost money. Parts for the
filter cost money. Dechlorinator chemicals cost money. I even made
the cabinet myself to save money but it was still over thirty quied.
In fact I'm struggling right now as I have no money and need spares
- the impellor shaft broke at the weekend. It all adds up!
If you want to really enjoy them, I'd say it DOES cost money.
Like most hobbies.
So please don't delude people!
It also needs time in order to ensure your tank is maintained
properly and your fish are kept healthy. I'd hate to see people
thinking they could keep fish for next to no money, following
your advice and buying some, then getting bored and slacking on
the maintenance.
Why is your name "Great Deals"? What are you selling?
(Actually, don't answer that in this forum!)

I'm not in this to do it as cheaply (and might I mention unattractively) as
possible.
I'm in it to do it right.
I smell a troll.

I'd ask how your nitrate and nitrite levels are, but you're obviously too
cheap to buy the test kits.
That tank is a ****in eyesore. Why even keep fish? Can't you spend $5 at
Wal Mart and buy a god damned air pump?

in fact, i had my water test done by PetCo for free. The water is
perfect. I don't know how this could happen, without air/fresh water.
i can buy air pump, but it takes too much electricity for around clock
running. indeed, i am too lazy to use hand pump too, which i bought
from walmart too.
my fish is better than the fish in PetCo. the fish in petco in my
local store all have white dots now. i was trying to buy some more
fish but worried that they will kill my old fish....
i had pets in my life almost 10 times now. it is the first time they
are alive after taken care by me for 30 days. i am so happy. i had
cats, dogs, turtles, fish, plants. you don't want to know what
happened to them.

No kidding. Quit feeding the troll, and he'll have no game to play. One
biting comment, just on the off chance he's serious is enough. Then ignore
him.

I agree totally. How sad, pathetic and empty his/her life must be to
resort to this for attention. I feel sorry for them.

Maybe he was trying to be funny, and hoping to get a thread with weird a
whacko ways of setting up tanks. Geeks are famous for it - using an empty
monitor as ashtray, building a computer with bricks, glass (yes fishtanks
too), styrofoam, old suitcases, building the computer into the wall in the
WC, into a piano - well - you get the idea.....

You have to consider the dry weight. Chicken contains a lot of water,
which provides no nutritional value to the fish. So flake food may
well be cheaper on a dry weight basis.

I had to scroll up.
Now I'm bummed.
No offense to you, Jim....The newsgroup lost a beloved member by the name of
