View Full Version : BGA and bioload correllation?

Hello all,

Recently, one of my tanks experienced an unfortunate case of
dropsy. It killed off most of the fish I had in the 20G tank. Two bolivian
rams and three ottos were all that was left in a tank that was used to
having half a dozen swordtails and some rainbows in there too.

Within a week, I got a huge outbreak of BGA. Nasty blue-green
slime all over everything. I immediately cut my light from 14 hours a
day to 8, cut back on feeding and fertilization, and planned on starting
marycyn treatment if it didn't shape up quickly.

Then, I went to my LFS and picked up a foursome of australian
rainbows and some ottos, stuck them in my quarantine tank, and two weeks
later, into the main tank.

Within a day of doing this, my BGA totally stopped growing. I
was surprised - it hadn't shown signs of slowing down, and I hadn't yet
started Marycyn treatment. So this begs the questions - can BGA be
controlled with bioload?

A Pope has a Water Cannon. It is a Water Cannon.
He fires Holy-Water from it. It is a Holy-Water Cannon.
He Blesses it. It is a Holy Holy-Water Cannon.
He Blesses the Hell out of it. It is a Wholly Holy Holy-Water Cannon.
He has it pierced. It is a Holey Wholly Holy Holy-Water Cannon.
He makes it official. It is a Canon Holey Wholly Holy Holy-Water Cannon.
Batman and Robin arrive. He shoots them.

I got rid of it when I added nitrate to a planted
tank which had zero nitrate. I read somewhere,
might have been on Chuck's pages, that some
species of BGA can fix nitrogen. I appears that
adding the nitrate (via PMDD) gives the higher
plants back the advantage. I don't know for
sure if that's what happened but the BGA certainly
is gone. Increasing the fish load would have a similar
effect I should imagine.
