Something I have learned recently. Be vary careful when taking ammonia
readings after having added chemicals such as AmmoLock or Kordons
Amquel+. These ammonia removers give false readings in the ammonia
test kits. I did not know this and had constantly high ammonia
readings using Mardel test strips. but my fish were doing well
however.

I found out that one needs to use a Salicylate Ammonia test kit. These
are made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals and Kordon Novalek. I am
currently using the Aquarium Pharmaceutical one which is readily
available in all petshops. It is a liquid test kit. Works well and I
see that my ammonia levels are at 0.

Don't even bother with buying an ammonia monitor such as those by
Seachem if you are planning on using ammonia removers.

The ammonia test kit that I am using now does not indicate anything
about it on the packaging as being a Salicylate test kit. You need to
make sure as they manufacture two types of test kits the other one
being based on the Nessler. The one based on the Nessler system will
give false readings.

Open up the box and read in the documentation. It will say what type
of test kit it is. They go for around 6 dollars for about 130 test. I
beleive the Salicylate test kit is the one which states 130 tests on
the packaging...where as the Nessler one states 75 tests.

Hope all of you get your ammonia readings right.
