If memory serves me right (I haven't bought a new one in years), is that it's
15 watts per gallon.
Someone please check that for me. = )
As for type..submersible is the way to go.
Most hang on the back type are junk.
Then, you get into cheap model vs. high end models.
I had a not so cheap, cheap model made by Wisper (submersible), and the black
coating on the outside of the glass-used to disguise the inderds-peels off.
I've had 2 do the same thing. I won't buy that cheap anymore.
I've heard good things about Tronic, and Visatherm, and am sure there are great
other ones that I am forgetting, but it's a start.

I've had best luck with Ego-Jager and Visitherm. (Don't cheap out, a
cheesy heater can cook your buddies...)

Also, life is too short to worry about heaters that are not fully
submersable...

Ebo Jager. Just ordered another one to replace another brand which is
heating too high.

3-4 watts per gallon is plenty!
I like Ebo-Jager heaters. They have more exacting controls and work
very well.

And go forever, even with the abuse I put them through. <g>

Oh, and another note - 2 heaters at half wattage is better than one at
full wattage unless it's in a small tank. If 1 fails the other is
there to back it up - or if 1 gets stuck on and overheats it won't
overheat as badly as one at double the wattage.

I've have a Hagen, Tronic, Marineland (from their kit) and 3 Ebo Jagger's

I will only buy Ebo's from now on. Glass is tough (2mm) they really are
calibrated, set my Ebo' for 29degC and that's exactly what I'll get
constantly.

IMHO, you can't get a better heater than Ebo Jaeger. They're a little
more expensive but they're completely submersible, I've checked the
temp shown on their dial against the temp in the tank with a digital
thermometer and never found an Ebo off more than a degree, they're
tough to break and easy to set, and they last a long time. Rule of
thumb - 5 watts per gallon should be all you need. I'd recommend two
heaters in anything over 55 gallons - more consistent temp throughout
the water column and if one does fail, you have the second to keep
things somewhat steady until you can replaced the failed heater.

Thanx to everyone who replied. It looks like the Ebo-Jager gets the vote
then. I like the idea of two small ones, I'll have to see if I can work
out where to put a second (going for a tank with no visible equipment).

Thanx again to everyone.
