View Full Version : Strange Platty phenomenon>?

I have a female platty in a community tank. She has given birth twice
already in the last 3 months. As expected she started to swell up again.
However, on Sunday morning I noticed that she was looking like a balloon
- like she was going to burst. So much so that her scales are standing
out form her body. Apart from this, she seems fine, swimming around fins
and tail fully unfurled, eating heartily, lively and active. There is a
small red mark on one side of her body, however, less than one
millimetre long.
Does anyone have any ideas or is this normal?
TIA.
Paul.

The scales standing out is probably a symptom of Dropsy (usually
described as a pinecone-like appearance). It's a symptom of kidney
failure, I believe. Unfortunately, it's usually fatal. There are some
medications out there, but they're rarely effective.

Sorry to be the bearer of ill tidings...

Thanks for the information. It helps to have an idea of what is
happening.
