View Full Version : Filtration for Gorby

As you know, I got Gorby, this huge Midas... and the owner only gave me the
Whisper(hate these things) 30-60 filter, and personally, I don't like
them.... but this is another question...

it's a 75g tank, but the filter is said to be 30-60g filter... Does that
sound like it's not enough???

Reason I ask, is it's a strong filter, BUT, he's a big fish and it worries
me that the whisper filter isn't enough.... so I added a sponge filter, just
in case.... problem is, the sponge had not been used and since this was a
total surprise guest, it never had been put into service, thus, no
beneficial bacteria...

When we setup the tank, we used 15g of his old water to help with cycling,
but I don't think that'll be enough, as I've since learned they washed the
filter cartridges and pads clean.... last night it was looking cloudy and I
checked the filter and learned this last night....

Can I/Should I get another 30-60 HOB filter to help? or wait and do every 3
day water changes to keep ammonia and nitrite down? I'll be doing tests
tonite to verify it's cycling or not...

My favorite external canister filtration is Eheim. I think it's the best.
They last forever too and they are completely silent. Not cheap, but it's
money well spent.
As far as cycling goes, I'd be a bit worried about that fish. It takes
weeks to properly cycle a tank. Unfortunately, by doing frequent water
changes, you are only making the cycling process take longer. Generally
you should cycle a tank with disposable hearty fish, so good luck with
that.
I would get that fish out of there if you want him/her to survive.
One product I have used is "Cycle". It adds the good, ammonia eating
bacteria and helps your tank cycle more quickly.

I take that you've not SEEN Gorby.... go over to news:alt.binaries.aquaria
and see the monster in question....

I know about the cycling process, not a newbie... I'm just curious about the
volume of water a certain filter can move and whether or not it's a good
idea to add more mechanical filtration...

I have an old used 2217 eheim that I'd like to use, but last time it was
running it had a leak in one of the connectors, and never have been able to
get it sealed.... but that's a whole other subject....

No offense mate/petshop owners, but I seriously would not touch that
stuff...marketing hype at its absolute best!!!!
