View Full Version : "Coolie" loach

Can't remember whether it's kuhli or coolie, but anyways, anyone else have
these little guys?
I've had mine a few months now, quite interesting creatures. Look dead 50%
of the time until I do a waterchange, then they are the life of the tank.
They remain very active for about a week or so after the waterchange, all
three playing in the bubble mist, like synco swimmers. By the end of the
second week, they back to lounging under the plants, moving ever so slowing
to get closer to a flake that landed near them.
When I do the two week water change, they come back to life again. So, I'm
curious what nutrients or minerals would be in the fresh tap water that
rejuvinizes them, that would disappear after two weeks.
Cheers

Its the Nitrates and other unwanteds that build up over that time (2weeks).
The new fresh water obviously rejuvenates them making them active again. Why
not change the same ammount of water weekly instead of biweekly...happy
Kuhli's all round.

i love 'em... they keep a betta busy.... hahaha...
I've decided recently to change 30-50% of my water weekly specifically
because I've put a betta in that tank... they all like it...

I'm curious as to why you're going to start changing 30-50% weekly *because* of
the Betta?
Bettas are the same as any other fish....they don't require extra water changes
or more of a % either....Just continue the normal weekly 20% water changes and
a good monthly vacuum, etc.
This is of course, assuming this is a cycled tank-with filter, etc.
I wouldn't recommend housing a Kuhli Loach in an unfiltered tank, as some folks
keep their Bettas in.

it's a fully filtered and cycled, 9 month old tank, heavily planted, well,
mod-heavy planted, 3 cories, 3 kuhlis, and Bob... Bob da betta
I've recently noticed that after about 10 days, the plants get kinda covered
by the 'dust' that is generated by the onyx sand, which I like, but am
beginning to "NOT" like because of the dust it releases... every time a cory
goes out for a bite to eat, they tend to knock stuff around a bit, and get
dust flying... it settles on the plants... and I think this is normal, as
the onyx has many smaller particles that I've been getting out with each
vacuuming.... yet, the water is nearly crystal clear....

Put more plants in to eat up the Nitrates...

Do they have Golden Dojo loaches in your area? If so I highly recommend
them! They are a beautiful banana yellow color with pink "cheeks" (the blood
in the gills showing through the gill covers makes them pink)! My 12 year
old nephew likes them so much he will only feed the fish for my mom if she
has a Golden Dojo in the tank! She's currently on the lookout for one as her
previous 6 inch specimen died and my nephew won't even go near the tank now.
Unlike Kuhlis, Dojos don't mind light too much and are quite active even in
a brightly lit tank. Unfortunatly I can't find the Golden version and had to
do with just the plain tan with brown/black spots Dojo loach. They're still
cute though!

Welcome to the club Red. I have been changing 50% + per week now for
years and have a tank full of happy, healthy fish to prove it. Now I
will not knock a 20% change but 50 leaves far les DOC's (dissolved
organic compounds) in the tank and that works for me. Just start
slowly with 25, 30 and so on so you don't shock them.
