I've noticed that my fan tail guppies try to eat flakes (Wardly Total
Tropical) but usually spit the entire flake out. Are they actually
getting any sort of nutrition from the flake when they do this? I do
not really see them eating anything. The flakes are crushed up to be
pretty small.

Sounds to me like they don't like the taste of that stuff. Try some samples
of other flakes and see if they find any of these more palatable. And to
answer the nutrition question: No, they aren't getting anything out of them
if they don't digest them.

Different fish like different foods. Even the same breed has differences in
preferences. Keep trying till you find something they like. Try
"livebearer " foods, my guppies seem to prefer some of them.

Basically, Wardley foods are just above generic. Not far above Hartz crud.
Try a better food, such as Tetra, Hikari, Nutri??? forgot the name. There are
many other quality foods out there.

Probably not, i suggest changing branks and see if they like it.
Also make sure that the flake is not to big for them as well
