In the kitchen department of your local Target or similar store, check out
the digital thermometers with 6" stainless probe for cooking. I bought one
after getting fed up with the stick-on liquid crystal types.

After comparing my new aquarium (formerly kitchen) thermometer to a digital
medical thermometer, I opened up the former and adjusted a little
potentiometer inside until it measured just .2 degrees F away from the
faster and more accurate medical one. The aquarium thermometer now also
agrees very closely with several other (non-immersible) digital
thermometers I have about the house to check the air temperature.

Morale: Verify before you trust.

I next took out two old Weston dial photography thermometers from many
decades ago and saw that they were 3 and 5 degrees low. Still useful, now
that the discrepancy is known.
