My 10gal tank now has small ramshorn snails. Clown loaches control the
snails in my other tanks but would be too large for this tank, esp I keep
more than one. Any ideas?

TIA

I have a similar problem. I have small loaches in my 10 and
20 gallon tanks, but not in my 30 gallon. I cull the snails
from the 30 gallon and dump them into the other two tanks
where they are dealt with. :) Culling is as simple as
dropping an algae wafer into the tank, waiting for the
snails to gather, then net them up.

depending on how small of snails we are talking about, i have african dwarf
frogs in my ten gallon along with a few snails. been this way for quite a few
months now and i am still yet to see any new snails. not sure if they are the
reason but i have seen them nip at the snails before. might warrent a bit of
further research though.

Try a few yoyos or similar small loaches. You can always trade them out if
and when they get too big, or just get a bigger tank.

Ted,
I have ADF in a 12 gallon , funny you mention this I see no egg
masses and the snail population is lowering, but I also had a frog die of an
impactation. I don't know if it was a gravel or small snail he shoved in
his mouth? This only happened once I have 6 frogs. maybe it was a freak
accident?

Anyone else have an ADF with an impactation?

I have 6 x 4in clown loaches in my other tanks. They were my favourite fish
when I started and couldn't imagine trading them in. I have 5 tanks and the
10 gal is the smallest, so trading in fish and getting more/bigger tanks is
not what I prefer to do.

I've read that clown and skunk loaches are the best snail eaters, but not
heardabout yoyos. I'll do some research on these

Thanks

Leong

I did a lot of research on this a while ago. Your email indicates you're in
NZ. Not sure about there but in Australia, about the only legal loaches
importation-wise are the clowns and the kuhlis.

I keep kuhli loaches, and aside from being cool little buggers, cheap, and a
hoot to watch as the bloke at the LFS tries to catch them, they are supposed
to be enamoured of baby snails as a tasty treat. Certainly since getting
them I have noticed far less small snails coming through, to the point where
I think I have a good number of them.

BUT: If I had my choice I would have put zebra loaches in the tank. They are
supposed to be like their bigger clown siblings but only get to about 10cm
or such. Then I could have had a swarm of the little guys. I am content, my
kuhlis are great.

Couplea links for ya. The site has other loaches and more as well.

Ah, so thats why I cant find any other loaches apart from clowns and kuhlis.
We have some damn queer rules in Oz. Pictures on the net of zebra loaches
make them look so appealing--but I guess my dream of finding some is never
to be realized. Mores the pity.

Guys,

you're looking for snail eaters in the small size? How about something
that native to your area, I got some peacock gudgeons from a local club
auction and they did an awesome job of clearing the tank of snails, and on
top of that they are awesome looking.

Well, well--yes this looks like an interesting possibility, thanks mate. It
sounds as though feeding them might be a problem in a community tank though.
Anyway, will talk it over at my very helpful LFS.
