View Full Version : Marineland Explorer tank runs hot!

I have a 2-gal Explorer tank housing a few White Clouds and Rosies, and
note that the water temp routinely is in the range of 5 to 7 degrees F
warmer than the room air temp. Since the Explorer has NO electric light of
any kind, and no heater, I wonder where the heat is coming from. I do see
that the pump housing (similar to several of the smaller Marineland tanks)
feels a bit warm.

Anybody have any other explanation or experience with this tank? It seems
to be the smallest with a bio-wheel.

Yes my explorers run 4+ degrees warmer than ambient. I attempted to
measure the current running thru the motor to make a correlation, but
the ammeter I had access to didn't get low enough...

My two little eclipse tanks run warm, too, but not that warm without
the light on. I wonder how clean your impellor assembly is--it can get
gunked up, which would cause friction. I have also seen one friend's
Explorer seize up and melt the lid before the motor burned out.

Maybe you should check and see if your impellor and housing need
cleaning? See page 20 of the manual if you've not done this before.
