My child has a 20 gallon tank with 4 paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis). I
think they're all female fish. My reason for choosing these fish is because we
have had frequent power outages in our area and I wanted fish that could easily
withstand 65 degree F. water if necessary. Any suggestions on other fish that
could both be accommodated in 65 degree temperatures and reasonably get along
with the Paradise fish? I thought perhaps some female betas would work. Any
suggestions are appreciated.

Almost any hardy fish will survive 65F. Heck, I keep several different
livebearers at that temperature. My indoor thermostat is set to 62F
during the day and 64F at night and I don't have any heaters in my tanks.
The livebearers do not reproduce as much, but, they are healthy. Water
also maintains it's temperature well and even if the house gets cold, the
water will stay warmer than the house for quite some time.

I would caution against Bettas since they are sort-of related (Anabanatids)
and there might inter-species aggression.

If you like Asian fish, How about Clown Loaches? Dojo Loach? Or perhaps,
some of the larger but quiet Blue Gourami?

If you are in N. America, you could also pick up some minnows (Cyprinids)
from the bait store and keep them in that tank. They'll be very happy at 65F.
I don't know if you can get Sticklebacks where you are, but, those also work.

My daughter also has a cold water tank and besides paradise fish she has
weather (Dojos) loaches and white cloud mountain minnows. These fish do
best in cooler temps and unlike tropical fish, thrive.
