Hi, I just purchased a few Ghost shrimp and I noticed one of them has about
a dozen eggs inside of it. Do I need to do anything special to preserve
them? I moved it to a tank that only has Ghost shrimp, and one Bamboo Shrimp
(injured in battle). Any help would be great!!! TIA Jim

I had/have plenty of ghost shrimp. When they replicate you must be sure that
the little ones have plenty of hiding places as they are tasty bits for
almost anything in your tank - even the parents. Also you may want to be
sure some iodine is in the water. Apparently this helps with shell formation
of both the young as well as adults dureing molting. I asked my LFS and she
said perhaps 1 tsp of regular iodized table salt in 10 gallons would be
sufficient.

Don't do anything about the eggs. The female is carrying them around UNDER
her... not inside her. She's holding them in place with all her back legs
and fanning them to keep them clean and oxygenated. Leave her alone and she
will have shrimp fry within a few weeks. Getting the fry to live to
adulthood is another matter. I've had 2-3 survive in my heavily planted 55g
from the last clutch and another female is gravid now. As long as there are
enough to keep being my Merry Tank Maids I don't care if the whole batch
doesn't survive. The Krib says, "Liquid invertebrate food, microfoods,
minute algae, and/or baby brine shrimp are excellent first foods" Here's the
link if you want to read for yourself: http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Shrimp/

This is my second attempt at posting a reply, so I'm sorry if the first
shows up later. First thanks for the help. I did find the link helpful.
Also I was wondering, should I add the salt now, or after they hatch and I
remove the mother? (all other tank mates have been relocated) Also should I
shut off the power filters so they don't get sucked up or will they stay
down low in hiding? Sorry for all the questions, I do appreciate the help.

sure! wouldn't hurt... I assume you're talking about the iodized salt which
is supposed to help them form their exoskeleton???

again... sure! The young are tiny and would probably get sucked up into the
filter if you don't. A sponge filter works best in these situations.

You may want to try a "pre-filter". Have a look at the following from
Petsolutions, I bought mine through them and they are great! =)

Hope this Helps!
