View Full Version : Silver Dollar (Metynnis argenteus) rare?

Hi there,
Do most people find that Silver Dollar fish rare in your locality? One
major LFS in my area has 3 and said they probably won't get any more soon
since they're not very popular. Is this reflective of this fish? Are they
not very popular? Just wondering because I think they're such a beautiful
fish and am looking to get a small group of 4-5.

Not in my area, I can find them in almost any LFS here in Canada.

A small group of silver dollars? At a max size of over six inches diameter
they'll need a BIG tank ;o)
BTW they are quite common in the UK - any store will get them to order but
because of their potential size they are not always stocked. They eat
plants -even those most fish won't touch.

Interesting... are you in a large city? I'm in Halifax.

I know that the fish can become large, that's not really my concern. I'm
just wondering about availability. I guess you have a point about the LFS
not carrying them since they can reach up 6 inches.

They're pretty common in the UK but are sold as very small juveniles (about
the size of a 50p in the UK or a quarter in the US). They're great fish,
I've got three. They're non aggressive, eat anything, look like they have
attitude (when they actually don't) and are very graceful in the tank. They
do get to be about 6" in size though so you do need to have some room for
them and plastic plants are better than live one's as they do like to nibble
at them.
I'd certainly recommend buying some.

50p it's been a long time. I used to live in the UK a few years ago. I'm
just having some difficulties getting them in Halifax, Canada. There is one
LFS here that has 3 in stock but they are adult already and are being sold
for $20 each. I'm now trying to find out if there is anyway I could get
these lovely fish. And you're right... they have a "Get outta my way" look,
but they are gentle.

Funny you mention you bought yours at Wal-mart John. I did see a few at one
of the Wal-marts here. Not really trusting Wal-mart for actual fish but for
products I was a bit hesitant. Maybe I'll try my luck with them. I think
they had only a 4-5.

What type of conditions do you keep in the tank for your Silver Dollars?
Have you been able to breed them?

I've three silver dollars and got them a couple of years ago. they are all
about 4 inches maybe a little more. I can't keep other smaller fish in the
tank not because they're mean or anything..they are just so big and
sometimes at feeding they get a little excited...and well the smaller fish
couldn't put up with the body blows.
They don't eat java fern and some types of crypts. The green ones with the
rounder leaves. Mine seam to prefer foods that have red in them. The LOVE
red leaf lettuce and not so much the green. They develop a geat red breast
and the tips of their fins are black edged with red. I think they want to
breed at times cause they shimmer next to each other, turning in circles and
fluttering. It's really quite neat.
Have fun with them.

Jazzy,
My silver dollars are in 25 degrees temp, 7.5ph, medium hard water, zero
ammonia, zero nitrite and pretty much zero nitrate. They're supposed to
prefer soft acidic water as most South American fish do but mine are
thriving in medium hard alkaline. I haven't bred from them but as the other
correspondent said, they do seem to get a bit horny at times and shimmer
against each other.

I've eaten these before. The indians speared them from a canoe
on the Rio Coca, a tributary of the Napo, in Ecuador, also when
fishing with dynamite upriver. I remember some of these were a bit
bigger, maybe eight or ten inches. If I ever scan my slides I'll post
the pics. Much better than plecostomus.

I've had them many times over the years. Very pleasant fish indeed. In
fact they are the biggest fish that I ever had that didn't even go after
guppy babies! Voracious plant eaters.
