View Full Version : The fish are dead... what's next?

Long story short: bought a crayfish, were assured he was fine with
other fish, but after we found out he wasn't and got a ride (no car)
to the distant not-so-L-FS to get a new tank for the crayfish, the
comets were so stressed they died within days. I don't know if it was
residual stress from the crayfish or the combination of the crayfish
and a water change, but they've all died.

Ammonia tests normal, as does PH. There's still an active pleco in the
tank having a pretty good time. I'm wondering if I should do anything
to this 30-gallon in the interim, or just let it run empty for a
couple of weeks until we get around to getting new fish?

Thanks,

- Matt

Just remember to feel the pleco...

Not recommended,

Unless you haven't experienced their spikes first-hand yet...
Then you'll know why it isn't recommended...

yeah, it's much better to fee-d- the pl*co than feel him... he might like
the attention, but I'm sure like many other pl*cos that he's kinda shy....

Update... the pleco just died. No idea why. Water tests seem fine, I
was feeding him every morning, and he just keeled over during the
night and was stiff at the bottom this morning.

Should I haul everything out of the tank and wash it? What's the right
procedure with a "death tank"?

good question... but when all have been lost, it's not a bad idea to try to
clean it out...

1. don't use any detergents, AT ALL...
2. hot water, as hot as you can stand it
3. cloth towels, or paper towels only
4. Let it run for 4 weeks, and do a thorough fishless cycle before you buy
fish...
