View Full Version : Pigmy cory with no tail

I just noticed one of my pigmy corys struggling to swim. When I got
close to investigate, I saw his tail fin is gone! Water parameters are
normal and there are no aggresive fish in that tank: male guppies, 3
zebra loaches (Botia striata), and 3 cherry shrimp. Plus a lot of MTS
and 2 large Pomacea bridgesii.
What could have caused this? The other pigmy corys look fine and are
swimming around with no problems.

I've read some comments on zebra loaches nipping tails!! ( but admittedly
fewer than those for skunk loaches.....I think I was concentrating on
looking for small snail eaters when I did my research, and didn't take
enough notice of the aggressive nature )

Hmmm... I thought they were peaceful loaches... I might have to move
them to the large tank then... But then who will control the snails in
the little tank? Or I could just breed the snails in the little tank,
then move them to the large tank for snacks?

I suspect a bacteria got in and digested the tail to the base. There
might not be anything which you can do. Try a little Mela-fix as a
anti-bacterial preventative, watch for any fungal outbreak and cross your
fingers that there is enough left that it will re-grow. JMO (one of many
;~)
If you suspect it was done by predation, then another pygmy cory will
begin to show damage. Then your solution is separation.
