View Full Version : Searchable fish database?

October 22nd 03, 09:47 PM
Is there any kind of Searchable online fish database that lets you specify
criteria? Ideally, I'd like to be able to specify parameters, and then get
a list of matching fish, so as to get ideas for new friends for my fishies.

Example:

Search:

Where Temp = 75-80
Where Behavior = Friendly
Where Water = freshwater
Where Size < 5"

A former poster 'Sorin' from Denmark (?) to these newsgroups had made a
similar database and posted during 1999-2001 .
You may want to go through Google News and search.

There are others. http://www.fishbase.org is more Ichthyology oriented
and does not have the 'Behavior' attribute you specify.

If you don't mind a book, then the Bensch [sp] Atlas is a good place too.

Nice sites, but not much different that any other lists of fish.

These sites are useful if you want to know more about a particular fish, but
I'm looking for a way to find fish based on particular characteristics.

http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/

... has some searchable parameters, such as water & size. Use ecosystem
to replace temperature. Behaviour is not a searchable parameter. For
that, a community cross-reference spreadsheet might help, such as
(reaches into bookmarks...):

http://www.geocities.com/gletiecq/fishcompat.html

...which also has some references to water, temperature etc.

Some other 'beginner' sites for stocking (even beginner sites have
tit-bits of neat information).:

Sorry, it was Soren "Disky" Reinke and it was actually a aquatic
plant search engine (not a fish search engine). Is Disky still
around these days? What about Nestor8?

My mistake ...

(and I was too busy to do a search yesterday)

That is *EXACTLY* what I was looking for. And it does have a "temperment"
field, which is what I meant by "behavior".

(Although temperment, in retrospect, is a much more appropriate term).

Thanks, Netmax!
