View Full Version : Red blotch on Kuhli

October 23rd 03, 04:45 AM
I've noticed a small red blotch on my Kuhli, near his gills. His behavior
is normal, and he is his usual energetic feeding self.

There have been several "optimizations" to the tank lately, which may have
stressed him, including water and gravel change.

The LFS suggested I add 2 Tbsp of Salt to my 15 Gal tank, which I've done.

What is this blotch? What is Kuhli's pronosis? Is there *anything* else I
can do to help him along?

I did a similar thing long ago... I dumped 6 danios in a tank to cycle it...
before I knew what and how to do it correctly.... And I too ended up with
danios with red spots behind their gills... Asked some smart ppl and was
told that is ammonia burn... and that because my water wasn't cycled, the
ammonia burned their gills... I asked whatelse can cause this, they listed
the sudden change in water chemistry, nitrIte and ammonia are the number 1
reasons, but if you re-arranged the tank, ammonia spike is possible...

There may have been a suddeng change in water chemistry: I change 2/3 of
the tank's bottom gravel, causing much crap to release into the water. My
AquaClear 150 filterd it out in 1/2 an hour, though. When I noticed the red
spot, I tested for both nitrite and ammonia, but both were 0.

Is there *anything* I can do to increase my kuhli's chances for survival?

Is there any danger to adding antibiotics to the tank, on a "just in case"
basis?

more than likely, unless your tank still has ammonia present, it'll not kill
them directly, only shorten their lifespan... also, I wouldn't add anything
to the tank especially if it has been messed with, just be patient and let
things settle down, test water, keep on top of that, and you'll probably
have kuhlis for a while

btw, what is your usenet data mining tool do? mine for addresses?

your site is quite interesting... as are you...

It has two parts: The first parses a locally run news server, and inserts
headers into a mysql database.

The second is a web interface that lets you mine the database, looking for
idiosyncratic headers. You can, for instance, show all posts from a
particular IP address, or using a particular version of a newsreader, or
both... It's a neat tool for ferretting out sock puppets and other identity
sleight of hand.

When I initially started on it, 6 years ago, it was way ahead of it's time,
but now I'm sure it's rather passe, and likely duplicated, in-house by more
than 1 law-enforcement agency.

I've stopped development on it - It's free to a good home, provided the
person is interested in taking it and helping it become what it can be.
