What kind of fish (betta or oscar?), how large a tank, and how
stocked/overstocked are you?

Also what type of filtration system, and is there even a filtration
system in place now?

Filtration's biological necessity can be looked at as a function of the
amount of food added per volume of water, with an offset against the
amount of active plant material, but that's getting a little technical
;~) for your question.

My fish weathered six days (thanks to Isabel) without a filter, but I
would not recommend it for any longer than that. If you had one and it
broke, as long as you do frequent water changes till you get a new one
your fish should be ok. If you are wanting to have a filter free tank
than it is a whole new ball game with fish selection and so on. A
little more info would be helpful.

Thank you, Vicki, for your great answer! :-)

And, nope, I wasn't wanting a filter-free tank. Haha, when I first
got my fish tank it had a very noisy air pump and I WISH I could've
had a filter-free tank! But I soon bought a quieter pump and that I
am able to tolerate! I like the quiet ones. Very much so.

you happy.
