Can anyone please identify this loach:

http://v6.homelinux.com/loach.html

It was labelled as "Bengal Sucking Loach" in the shop, but looking that up
proves it clearly isn't one. I got two the same, but after a few months,
one is double the size of the other.

Help much appreciated.

It does have a couple similar characteristics, but I think it's something
else. I'm not even convinced it's a member of the botia family. Start your
search here http://www.loaches.com/ if you haven't already.

good luck.

Thanks for the response. I've checked out Chinese Algae Eaters, and it's
similar, but this one is much bigger, browner and fatter. It's really
boystrous and dashes about bashing into things, including my Angelfish.
:-)

It was impossible to get a decent picture, but he looks *much* fatter in
real life...

It appears to be a Faux Siamese Algae Eater.

Not a loach, but one of the sucker barbs from genus Garra. Not "false
siamensis" (which is Garra cambodgiensis), nor Chinese algae eater (which
is more related to loaches than barbs). I can't tell the species, but this
looks a lot like Garra ceylonensis and some others of the numerous Indian
Garra species.

Your pet could be of the same species as my late "green garra", which grew
little over 10 cm (4-5") long and turned really nasty when it got mature,
or my "Winnie", which is probably one of the Indian species, over 15 cm (>
6") and still growing and far from "peaceful and kind". But garra barbs do
eat at least some algae!

Thanks... I've managed to find one "Green Garra" and one "Garra
Ceylonensis" pic, and they look spot on. Mine are fantastic algae
eaters. Can't really find any information about them though. Any idea
where to look?

Robyn (of Robyn's fish/pond website) had information on garra pingi
pingis for me. You might try there...

There is nearly nothing written about garra fishes in aquariums, but
general info about the genus can be found from good books like the Baensch
Atlas series (species are sometimes misidentified there) and more
scientific books like "Freshwater Fishes of India". But good luck in
searching, anyway! There might be some magazine articles somewhere.

That's me. I don't have much info there though. I have a false Siamese
algae eater and while the fish in question looks almost the same, I don't
think it is. I don't think it's a garra pingi pingi either but I've only
seen a tank of live ones for a few minutes at the store and never kept one
so it's not engrained in my mind.

Jack, don't snip the important info buddy.... you left out the answer to the
mystery, and we're all left hanging like you tore out the last 4 pages of
the novel....

My money says "looks like a SAE/CAE/FF with a weird mouth" probably a
garra type.

Sorry, I should've pointed out which reply I meant. I'm pretty sure it's
either of these:-
* Garra ceylonensis:
http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?ID=9803
or
* Green Garra:
http://www.aquatic-gardeners.org/pic/green-photo.jpg

....if they're not the same thing. (Credit to Liisa Sarakontu). I can
certainly recommend these as fantastic algae eaters, although they do go
about looking for trouble half the time. I have two tanks, and tank 2
regularly fills up with algae. So I put one of these chaps in there
temporarily, and the next day, the whole tank is sparkling clean. :-)
