Hope someone can help me with this...

The pump/motor of my Eheim 2213 canister filter is rattling.

The manual online even mentions routine cleaning and maintenance. The
problem is that I can't seem to figure out how to get into the pump head
without breaking it.

Apparently there's an illustration in the manual, which would be great if I
knew where mine was. :(

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

Thanks,

I've seen those before. They tell you to clean out the pump head / motor
but don't tell you how to go about doing it. There's supposed to be an
illustration in the manual that shows you how to do it, unfortunately I
can't seem to find the illustration online. :(

My eheims have a ring that is rotated, then simply drops out, IIRC. Don't
feel like tearing into it right now. <g>

I'm looking at my Eheim 2213 classic manual right now. There is an
illustration (exploded diagram) which shows the motor head split into 4
components. The small gasket 7250600, the large gasket 7273118 and the
motor 7632500. The motor is shown open, such that the exterior cover is
removed. The motor base plate is the canister top (hold the gaskets,
motor etc). The cover only has the top hose connector attached. This
cover appears to be held by 4 flange tabs which come from the base plate.
If you look along the sides of the motor assembly, you should see 4 small
rectangular slots evenly spaced around the circumference. I suspect that
pushing these tabs in will allow you to rock the cover gently off the
base plate. A large automotive hose clamp (or a few connected together)
and 4 ball bearings should do the trick (if the tabs need to be pushed
in, all at the same time). hth

The only cleaning I ever did on mine was to open up the impellor area, and
clean it out with a q tip.
If you look at the bottom of the motr casing (the top of the whole filter),
you'll see an area that teh water comes out of whent he filter is running.
It snaps open. depending on exactly what year you got yours, it either
slides open or rotates. Once the cover is off, the impeller can be pulled
out - theres a bit of a magnet holding it place, so its not too hard (once
you can get a grip on it...). Anyway, take oout hte impeller, clean out the
hole, and put it all back together.

If you wait too long to clean it out, and the impeller housing gets gummed
up (or you run hte filter dry) the impellor will break into 2 pieces.
Replacements are only a couple of bucks - that might be what the rattle is.
Thats the only moving part I ever had fail on an eheim...

good luck

Thank you to everyone that helped me,

Netmax got me to a point and JD got me the rest of the way, heh.

I don't know if it's good or bad, but my impellor wasn't broken, lol. Guess
I'll give it a good cleaning and see if the ratting stops at that point.

Thanks again you're life savers!!

Just on a note, I recently cleaned my 2213 because it was rattling, but
after a cleaning it still did it. Any ideas why? When I pulled the rotor
assembly apart, I did not see the first cap to the axle. Maybe that's why??

Hmm! Maybe... I haven't put mine together yet, but I will eventually and
I'll let you know if it kept on rattling.
From what I could tell all parts were there and weren't broken.

I'll keep you posted.

My 2215 used to do that but we accessed it by a clip on the head of the pump
and we could access the imprapeller and things.

we cleaned out all the pipes and cleaned all the imprepaller and bits.
started it (priming) and it was pumping like a gooden'

we also put Vaseline round the seam ring.

Hope that is a bit of help.!
