External filter question

Hi,

My tank is going really well, my new xenia seems to have settled in well
and is growing nicely. I have a question I thought some of you guys may
have an opinion on.

I have a Vecton UV steralizer running off a pump in the tank.

I currently do not use carbon on my tank as I have nowhere to put it.

I have five pumps in my tank which I would like to cut down.

I don't have a sump and don't have overflows drilled in my tank so a
sump is not an option.

I am constructing a closed loop system for circulation with an external
pump beneath the tank which will remove three power heads.

If I got an external canister filter I could start using carbon, I could
also use it to supply the UV unit (removing another pump from the tank).
My question is this, what else do I put in the filter ? Is there any
benefit to putting small pieces of live rock in it ?

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to make sure I gave as much
information as I could.

I personally am not a fan of closed cannister filters. so my choice
would be adding a Aqua Clear AC110 hob type filter. It can me modded
and turned into a small fuge. It has good current flow and the AC110
is rated for tanks up to 110 gal capacity. Modifying the basket
assembly you then have the option to drop in phosphate sponges. chemi
pure, puri gen, activated carbon etc, as well as providing a means for
mechanical filtraiton and adding some good current flow.

I'd love to do this but they don't seem to be available over here which is
a shame as I've read about it several times but never seem to be able to
find one :(

I use Chemi-Pure and Bio Chem-Zorb in one tray of my Fluval can. I fill the top
tray with filter floss. I leave the third one empty. There are a variety of
things like ceramic chunks that would serve the same purpose as live rock in one
of these. I prefer to keep the live rock in the tank.

Overflow box mate. Just search for 'Overflow aquarium' on google and you'll
get some prices and ideas

Use it for chemical filtration, such as carbon, and stuff,
but for biological filteration, should be left to the live
rock, and live sand.
