View Full Version : African Dwarf Frog floating on top of tank :(

I recently purchased four African Dwarf Frogs. I put two of the
little guys in my one gallon filtered tank with my Betta. One of the
frogs almost immediately floated to the top (well, after an hour) and
he has been there ever since. I purchased (per various pet store
recommendations) quite the variety of food and found that three of the
frogs will eat frozen blood worms. I have never seen poor Floaty eat
anything, though perhaps he eats when I am not looking. When I
carefully touch Floaty he will move so he is alive. For quite some
time he only floated without movement. Yesterday he was quite active
(for him) and wiggled and swam around. At one point I watched him
attempt a number of times to swim to the bottom, only to pop back up
to the top.
One of the frogs in my other tank also started floating, but I suspect
that I overfed him, which can be remedied. However, I am quite
worried about Floaty. Except for this "stuck on the top of the tank"
business, he seems quite healthy. He is absolutely not bloated.
What's going on and what can I do for him?

maybe he's got bloat? and maybe he's inhaled an air bubble??
Not sure, I'll ask my wife about it

Thanks, though Floaty's problems are now much worse. After over three
days at the top of the tank, I found him on the bottom this evening
and thought "hurray!". However, three hours later Floaty was lying
upside down on the bottom looking very dead. I retrieved my net only
to find him sitting on the bottom normally. An hour later, he was
once again upside down. I watched him carefully and he righted himself
for a bit then moved accross the tank and flipped upside down again.
He not bloated and looks normal. I suspect he is not long for this
world. Can't think of what can be done for him.

i've had this happen to a couple of our frogs in the past too. not sure what it
is, i was hoping to watch this string for an answer.
near as i can tell they seem to just starve themselves to death, whether it be
from a parasite or virus or physical damage i dont know, but they refuse to eat
and end up very skinny, lethargic, and after a while dead. a couple of the web
searches i've done to try and find out have yielded little results.
sorry i cant be of more help, but at least you know you're not alone. :-/

What's your water like? Are you adding anything to it? Too much, too little?
The reason I ask this question is because I was having trouble with
ghost shrimp dying off for no apparent reason. I finally figured out
that the dose of amquel I was using to dechlorinate the water was too
high. I only needed to use a third of what I was using. (I found out
from the water department online that they're using chloramine, and got
a test kit to determine how much is added to the water, it turns out
to be a very small dose).
After I cut back on Amquel my remaing ghost shrimp is still surviving.
She's outlasted any of the ghost shrimp I've put in the tank. I don't
know if this is related, but I thought it might be worth a shot...

My son had a ADF that went through the same thing--
the frog did die eventually, but it took a long time (months).
Basically he spent more and more time upside down
and ate less and less. It was awful. I suspect some sort of
parasite, but I've found no reference to this syndrome.
In retrospect, euthanasia would have been kinder...

I will give that a try, though I declorinate the water and let it sit
for a day or two before using it for both tanks and my other frogs
appear fine. Maybe Floaty is a "canary" frog. I am so paranoid about
chlorine that I have been a little generous with the chemicals.
Thanks for the tip!

From what I have read, our little cuties have a tendancy towards bloat. I don't
know exactly what causes it, but it is contagious.
I have never had this problem with any of mine, so I can't help you from
experience, nor can I tell you what to treat them with.
(sorry) It's a start to Google with....just sear African Dwarf Frogs and Bloat.

Is it possible that the frog aquired some sort of parasite from their
food? I have ADFs keeping my beta company and I'm curious to know if
that might be the cause.

Looks like my post was lost, so if this ends up being a repeat, please
ignore. Poor Floaty died. If there were parasites they came from the
store as he became ill so quickly after purchase. I use only
commercial food so I hope that it is clean. I do think that the
freeze dried blood worms )as opposed to the frozen) might have caused
some gas bubbles in the other frogs (one in particular would eat a few
freeze dried worms and then almost immediately pop to the top and
float for an hour or two) but that problem was solved by soaking the
worms before feeding, feeding less often and using the frozen food
more often.
Thanks for the help from everyone.

Sorry to hear your ADF died. It probably came to you sick,
as you say, and then couldn't handle the freeze-dried food.
I fed my first frog that diet and it didn't last long. My
current two seem quite healthy on frozen foods, HBH frog
bites & whatever they can wrestle from the fish.
Try again. ADF are great to watch.

Hello, Hope it is ok if I join in on this thread .
I have lost a few ADF frogs that way and never figured out what the
cause was. I find that they do well on freeze dried tubifex worms,
TetraMin Tropical tablets and a treat of the freeze dried blood worms.
They will also eat some algae wafers as well. My frogs like to float
and it seems to be normal behavior as well as going around the tank
along the bottom..
Sorry about the loss of that frog. Hard to treat them when something is
wrong.

floating on the top is usually ok. the upside down thing happened to me when mine wasn't eating. Is he really skinny? the vet told me to do. Warm up the tank, to about 82-84 degrees, my frog looked better, soon after I did this. then get some mashed baby food, chicken or beef, some sort of meat, and force feed him. Luckily I got a dropper and I didn't have to forche his mouth open, I was nervous about that cuz he's so little, but I squirted it in his face and he started eating. At first he barley moved his mouth, but through the day he got more active. I offered him food about every 30 minutes. If you do have to touch your frog do it sparingly and w/ gloves the oil in our skin can hurt their skin. Make sure not to let the chicken go bad and you'll have to clean the tank to get the chicken debris out, and take them to a vet if you can in case they have a parasite or something, but this should help your frog. it helped mine A LOT! he looks so much better than yesterday when I found him, thank God :-)
